Visual novels: what they are, and 10 to play

What is a visual novel? A visual novel is a story-driven video game, of Japanese origin, that you mostly read. The story is told through text boxes over character art and backgrounds, with music and sound, and you move it forward by clicking or tapping. Many visual novels let you make choices that branch the story toward different routes and endings.

Wikipedia notes that visual novels are widely considered a form of video game, though some have little gameplay beyond reading. Below: how they compare to similar genres, and 10 to play across genres.

Visual novels vs. dating sims vs. otome games

  • Visual novel: the broad format. Any genre: mystery, sci-fi, horror, romance.
  • Dating sim: a romance game that adds stats, calendars or time management on top of visual-novel scenes; you raise a character's affection through choices and activities.
  • Otome game: a romance visual novel aimed at women, where you play a female protagonist pursuing one of several love interests. Our otome games guide covers them in depth.

Mystery and sci-fi visual novels

Steins;Gate (2009)

A self-styled mad scientist and his friends accidentally invent a way to send text messages to the past, and every change has consequences. A landmark of the genre, with branching routes.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2001)

A rookie defense attorney takes on impossible cases. Part visual novel, part courtroom puzzle game, and the first entry in a long series now available on modern consoles and mobile.

999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (2009)

Nine people are abducted and forced into a life-or-death escape game on a sinking cruise ship. The first Zero Escape game, mixing puzzle rooms with story sections.

AI: The Somnium Files (2019)

A detective in near-future Tokyo investigates serial killings by entering suspects' dreams. From Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi, with branching routes and multiple endings.

Cozy and character-driven visual novels

VA-11 Hall-A (2016)

You're a bartender in a dystopian city, mixing drinks and listening to customers' life stories. Mature themes; part of its appeal is its adult, conversational tone.

Coffee Talk (2020)

A barista in a fantasy version of Seattle serves drinks to elves, orcs and others while listening to their problems. It came to Android and iOS in March 2026.

Romance visual novels

Code: Realize − Guardian of Rebirth (2014)

An otome game with a steampunk setting and a cast drawn from literature and history, including Arsène Lupin and Victor Frankenstein. Localized in English by Aksys Games.

Hakuoki (2008)

An otome series set during the end of Japan's samurai era, following the Shinsengumi. Historical drama, supernatural elements and romance, with anime adaptations.

Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator (2017)

A single dad moves to a new town and finds himself dating the other dads in the neighborhood. A comedic, heartfelt dating sim from Game Grumps.

Clannad (2004)

One of the most popular visual novels ever, according to PC Gamer, known for its emotional "After Story." Note that its first half is set in high school.

How to choose a visual novel

  • Want a puzzle? Ace Attorney or 999 add gameplay to the reading.
  • Want a big story? Steins;Gate and AI: The Somnium Files are long, twisty and full of endings.
  • Want something relaxing? Coffee Talk and VA-11 Hall-A are slow, conversational and cozy.
  • Want romance? Start with an otome game or Dream Daddy.

Visual novels vs. interactive stories you write yourself

In a visual novel, every choice has been written in advance: you pick from a menu, and the game follows that branch. In AI-driven interactive stories, like the romance and drama stories in Be My Story, you type what your character says or does in your own words, and the scene responds. Our guide to interactive fiction explains the difference, and choose-your-own-adventure romance covers the branching-choice format.
