Otome games: what they are and 5 to try

What is an otome game? An otome game is a story-driven romance video game aimed at women, in which you play the heroine and choose which of several love interests to pursue. Otome is Japanese for "maiden", and Koei's Angelique (1994) is generally credited as the first.

Otome games are story-driven romance games made for women, where you play the heroine and choose who to fall for. They range from text-message dramas on your phone to 3D action games and detective stories in a courtroom. This guide explains what makes a game "otome," where the genre began, and five well-known games to try, including options if you loved Mystic Messenger.

Game details below come from each game's Wikipedia entry. Monetization and availability change, so check the current store listing before you download.

What is an otome game?

According to Wikipedia, an otome game is a story-based romance video game aimed at women. You make choices for a female protagonist, usually to build a romance with one of several male love interests. Otome is Japanese for "maiden," so the name means "maiden game."

Most otome games fall into two styles:

  • Visual novels: you read the story and choose dialogue or actions that shape your relationships.
  • Simulations: you raise stats, play minigames and go on dates to influence the plot.

Where otome games came from

Wikipedia credits Angelique, released by Koei in Japan in 1994 and developed by its all-woman Ruby Party team, as the first otome game. The term "otome game" itself emerged around 2001–2002. Yo-Jin-Bo (2006) was the first Japanese otome game officially translated and sold in English.

5 otome games to try

1. Mystic Messenger (mobile)

Developed by Cheritz and released in 2016 for Android and iOS, Mystic Messenger plays out in a messenger app. You get texts and join group chats in real time, and your replies build affection and shape the story. There are seven routes. It's a good first otome game if you like story delivered in small daily doses.

2. Love and Deepspace (mobile)

Developed by Papergames and released globally in January 2024, Love and Deepspace adds 3D graphics and real-time combat to the otome formula. You play a Deepspace Hunter fighting alien Wanderers alongside five love interests. It's free to play with gacha (randomized purchases). Wikipedia notes it won Best Mobile Game at the 2025 Gamescom Awards.

3. Tears of Themis (mobile)

From miHoYo (HoYoverse), released worldwide in 2021, Tears of Themis casts you as a 24-year-old defense attorney. You investigate crime scenes with four male leads, then argue each case in court, with debates played as card battles. Cards come from a gacha system.

4. Collar × Malice (Switch, PS Vita)

Idea Factory's Collar × Malice, released in English by Aksys Games (Vita in 2017, Switch in 2020), stars Ichika Hoshino, a rookie police officer who is fitted with a poisoned collar by a terrorist group and must investigate alongside former officers. It's a suspense story first, with a romance at each route's heart.

5. Amnesia: Memories (Switch, PC, mobile)

In Idea Factory's Amnesia: Memories, a fairy named Orion accidentally takes a young woman's memories, and she must recover them through the people in her past. The English version came out in 2015 on Vita, PC and mobile, and on Switch in 2022.

Not into anime-style games? Try interactive romance apps

If you want the romance but not the anime style, story apps like Choices and Episode offer interactive romance in many genres. They aren't otome games by the strict definition. Our choose your own adventure guide covers how they work.

Otome games like Mystic Messenger

If you loved Mystic Messenger's real-time, "this is happening to me" feeling, look for:

  • Daily-life integration: games that deliver story in short, timed bursts across the day.
  • Modern settings: contemporary cities and relationships over fantasy.
  • Mobile-first design: Love and Deepspace and Tears of Themis both run on your phone, with regular new content.

Otome games on PC, Switch and mobile

Where you play shapes what you get:

  • Mobile (free to play): Love and Deepspace and Tears of Themis are free to start and use gacha for extra cards and scenes. Mystic Messenger plays out as a messenger app on your phone.
  • Nintendo Switch: Collar × Malice (English release on Switch in 2020) and Amnesia: Memories (Switch in 2022) are complete visual novels you buy once.
  • PC: Amnesia: Memories was also released for Windows. For other PC otome games, browse the visual novel and dating sim tags on Steam and check each store page for content ratings.

Otome games vs. dating sims

The two are related but not the same. According to Wikipedia, a dating sim is a simulation game with romantic elements, where you manage a calendar and stats to win a character's affection; Tokimeki Memorial (1994) popularized the genre in Japan. An otome game specifically has a female protagonist and male love interests, and many otome games are story-first visual novels rather than stat-driven sims. Other dating sims follow boys' love, girls' love or open pairings.

Before you start: gacha and spending

Several mobile otome games use gacha: randomized purchases for cards or scenes. It's worth deciding on a monthly budget, or none, before you start, and checking each game's store listing for its current pricing and age rating.

Otome games vs. AI story apps

Otome games give you beautifully written, fixed routes: you choose between options the writers prepared. AI story apps like Be My Story take a different approach. You write what your character says or does in your own words, and the scene responds.
