Roleplay prompts: 24 scenarios written as ready-to-send first turns

What is a roleplay prompt? A roleplay prompt is a ready-made scenario that opens a scene: a place, a character with a goal, a problem already in motion and a line the other character has to answer. You can send one to a roleplay partner, a group or an AI story app.

Most roleplay prompts online are one-line ideas like "you're a knight, I'm a princess," and the AI has to guess the rest. The prompts below are written as complete first turns: a scene, a character with a goal, something in motion, and a hook to answer. Copy one, change the names, and send it.

These are original fictional prompts with adult characters and non-explicit romance.

What makes a roleplay prompt work

Every prompt here follows the same four-part structure:

  1. Scene: a specific place and moment.
  2. Character: who you are and what you want right now.
  3. Tension: something already going wrong, or about to.
  4. Invitation: a line or action the AI's character must respond to.

If a prompt you write is missing one of these, the reply usually feels generic. Our roleplay starter guide explains each part in detail.

Romance roleplay prompts

1. The wrong umbrella

The rain hasn't stopped all afternoon. I step out of the bookshop and open the umbrella I grabbed from the stand, and it isn't mine. It's covered in tiny embroidered stars. Behind me, someone clears their throat. "I think you've taken something that belongs to me."

2. The seating chart

At my sister's wedding, I find my place card at table six, right next to the one person I specifically asked not to be seated near. He's already sitting there, reading the menu like it's fascinating. "So. Did you arrange this, or did she?"

3. The shared oven

Since the fire, we take turns: four hours each, my bakery then hers. Tonight my dough is still proving when she walks in, ten minutes early, holding a tray of croissants. "Your timer's wrong. Or you're stalling."

4. The emergency contact

The nurse says my emergency contact is on the way, and I realize I never changed it. Twenty minutes later the curtain pulls back, and it's my best friend, still in their work clothes, breathing hard. "You said you'd update that form two years ago."

Fantasy roleplay prompts

5. The dragon's negotiator

I arrive at the village gate with the dragon's terms written on a scroll, and find a slayer already sharpening her sword in the square. She looks up, then at my scroll. "You're either very brave or very badly paid."

6. The healer's summons

The soldiers say the prince is dying and only I can save him. They don't know I'm from the village his army burned. I kneel by his bed. His eyes open. "You. I remember your face."

7. The library ghost

It's my first night as the archive's keeper. At midnight, a book slides off a shelf and opens to a page about an unsolved murder. The candle flickers. "If you can see me, please don't scream. I've been waiting a very long time for someone to read that."

8. The polite demon

The summoning circle flares and a demon steps out, adjusts his cuffs and looks around my tiny apartment. "I usually get a castle. Is this a test?"

Mystery roleplay prompts

9. The wrong ticket

I wake up on the night train with a ticket in my hand that isn't mine. The man across from me smiles like we've been traveling together for hours. "You were asleep at the border. I told them you were my sister. You're welcome."

10. The forger at the auction

I've chased her through three countries. Now she's two seats ahead of me at the auction, raising her paddle for a painting I know she forged. "Bidding on your own work? That's bold, even for you."

11. The safe

The client said the safe hadn't been opened in thirty years. When the lock gives, there's only one thing inside: an envelope with my name on it. "Did you know about this?"

12. The snowed-in lodge

The road's closed until morning. The only other guest at the lodge is the reporter who wrote the story that ended my career. She's taken the last chair by the fire. "Well. One of us should probably apologize."

Sci-fi roleplay prompts

13. The extra life sign

Two crew members. Two life signs. That's how it's been for six months. Tonight the scanner shows three. "Tell me you're running a diagnostic. Tell me that's a glitch."

14. Quarantine

Fourteen days in a sealed quarantine pod with the customs officer who caught me. She's reading my ship's log out loud. "'Cargo: assorted textiles.' Assorted. Really?"

15. The memory editor

The client wants one memory erased. I open the file to begin, and I'm in it. "Before you start, I should probably explain why I came to you specifically."

16. The loop

It's the ninth time today has started. She's at the same table, ordering the same coffee, and I have about four minutes to convince her before the explosion. "I know this sounds insane, but you're about to spill that."

Drama roleplay prompts

17. The inherited bookstore

Our parents left us the bookstore and a pile of debt. My brother wants to sell. I've just found the ledger that says the store was never as broke as they told us. "Sit down. You need to see this before you sign anything."

18. The reunion show

Ten years since the band broke up. One charity show. Our old drummer walks into rehearsal late, as always, holding the setlist we fought about. "I see you still put your song first."

19. The 2 a.m. caller

Every night at 2 a.m., the same caller rings my radio show and requests the same song. Tonight, she doesn't ask for the song. "I think it's time I told you why I call."

20. The vineyard

I bought the vineyard. The contract says the old winemaker stays for one more harvest. He's waiting in the cellar, arms crossed. "You don't know the first thing about these vines."

Adventure roleplay prompts

21. The cipher halves

We've been racing each other for the same treasure for a year. Now we're both stuck at the same locked door, each holding half a cipher. "Truce? Just until it opens."

22. The crash landing

The plane's down, the radio's dead, and my only passenger still won't tell me why she paid triple to fly tonight. "Now would be a great time to explain the briefcase."

23. The courier

48 hours. Don't open it, don't stop. Twelve hours in, a stranger slides into my passenger seat at a red light. "Keep driving. They're two cars behind you."

24. The uncharted peak

The client wants to climb the peak no one has summited. At base camp she shows me a photo of someone standing on top of it, dated last year. "So either this is fake, or someone lied to the world."

How to adapt these prompts

  • Change one detail to make it yours. Swap the setting, era or the relationship between the characters.
  • Match the app's format. In a story-first app, the scenario may already set the scene. Use the character's line and action as your first turn.
  • Keep the hook. Whatever you change, end on something the AI's character must answer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a roleplay prompt and a roleplay idea?

A roleplay idea is a one-line premise, like rival chefs sharing one kitchen. A roleplay prompt is that idea written out as the opening turn, with a scene, a goal, tension and a line to answer. For one-line premises, see our 100 roleplay ideas.

What makes a good roleplay scenario?

A specific place and moment, a character who wants something right now, something already going wrong, and an ending the other character must respond to.

Can I use these prompts with an AI?

Yes. Each prompt works as a first message for an AI story app or chatbot, as well as with a human partner or a group. Change the names and details to make it yours.

How do I write my own roleplay prompt?

Use the four parts above: scene, character, tension and invitation. If any is missing, the reply usually feels generic. Our roleplay starter guide walks through each part.
