What AI roleplay is
In AI roleplay, a large language model generates replies in character. You set or choose a scenario, take a role, and write your turn. The AI continues the scene, plays other characters, and reacts to your choices.
It descends from older forms of role-playing, like tabletop games, play-by-post forums and improv, but with a partner who's always available and never runs out of patience. The trade-off is that the AI follows your lead closely, so the quality of what you write shapes the quality of what you get back.
The main types of AI roleplay
| Format | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Character chat | You talk with one AI character, often user-created, in an open-ended conversation | Getting to know a character; casual, ongoing chats |
| Story-first apps | You enter a prepared scenario with a setting, roles and a starting scene, and write your character's actions and dialogue | People who want a plot, not just a conversation |
| Text adventures | The AI acts as narrator or game master and describes the world as you explore | Exploration, puzzles, branching quests |
| General chatbots | You set up a roleplay inside a general-purpose assistant with your own instructions | Full control, more setup work |

How to start an AI roleplay
The first turn does most of the work. Give the AI:
- A place and a moment. Not "a café," but "a café ten minutes before closing, in a storm."
- Your character's immediate goal. What do they want from this scene?
- Something already in motion. A question, an object, an interruption the other character has to respond to.
- A hook at the end. Finish on a line or action the AI can answer.
Our guide to writing a roleplay starter has eight written-out examples, and the roleplay ideas list has 100 setups to start from.
Tips for better AI roleplay
Write one intention and one action per turn
Turns that try to do five things get muddled replies. One clear goal, like asking, refusing, testing or confessing, plus one physical action gives the AI something specific to answer. See how to write AI roleplay dialogue.
Show, don't summarize
"She's nervous" gives the AI a label. "She straightens the same stack of menus twice" gives it a moment to respond to.
Let the other character surprise you
If you script both sides, the AI has nothing to add. Leave room for the other character to want something you didn't plan.
Steer with story, not commands
If a scene drifts, introduce a story event: a phone call, a knock, a storm, a reveal. That works better than stepping outside the fiction to correct it.
Know whose story it is
Decide whether you're playing yourself or a fictional character. It changes how you write. We cover this in playing yourself or a character in AI roleplay.
Staying safe and in control
- Check each app's rules. Age requirements, content policies and data practices vary by app. Read the terms and privacy policy before you share personal details.
- Keep real personal information out of the story. Your character doesn't need your address, workplace or full name.
- Remember it's fiction. An AI character can be warm and convincing, but it's a model generating text. Take breaks, and keep real-world decisions in the real world.
