What AI character chat is
An AI character is a chatbot given a personality: a name, a voice, a backstory and a way of speaking. Behind it, a large language model generates each reply, guided by the character's description and the conversation so far.
The best-known service is Character.AI, founded by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas, which opened its public beta in September 2022. Users can chat with characters others have made, or create and publish their own.
How AI characters are built
Most platforms build a character from a few ingredients:
- Description: who the character is, their personality and background.
- Greeting: the first message, which sets tone and scene.
- Example dialogue: sample lines that teach the model the character's voice.
- Memory of the chat: the model reads recent messages to stay consistent. Very long conversations can lose early details.
If you create your own character, the greeting and example dialogue matter most. A character that shows its voice in two sample lines is more consistent than one with a long list of adjectives.
Character chat vs. story apps
| What to compare | Character chat | Story-first apps |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | A personality | A scenario with a setting and a situation |
| Shape | Open-ended conversation | A scene that moves toward events |
| Your role | Often yourself, talking to the character | Usually a character inside the story |
| Best for | Getting to know a character, casual ongoing chats | Plot, drama, romance arcs |
Neither is better; they suit different moods. We compare them in detail in AI companions vs. interactive story apps.
Tips for better AI character conversations
Give the character something to react to
"Hi, how are you?" gets small talk. "I found your name in my grandmother's diary. Why?" gets a story.
Stay in the fiction
Characters work best when you treat the world as real. Ask what they'd ask, and react like someone who lives there.
Bring a situation, not just questions
Interviews get repetitive. Put the two of you in a situation, like a delayed train, a locked room or a deadline, and let the conversation happen inside it. Our 100 roleplay ideas are a quick source.
Shape the voice with your own writing
The model mirrors you. Longer, more descriptive turns usually get richer replies; one-word turns get thin ones. See how to write AI roleplay dialogue.
Reset instead of arguing
If a character drifts out of voice, many apps let you regenerate a reply or restart the chat. That's usually faster than correcting the character mid-conversation.
What to check before you sign up
- Age rules. Requirements differ by app and change over time. For example, Character.AI announced in October 2025 that it would stop users under 18 from chatting with characters, according to Wikipedia's summary of its history. Always read an app's current terms.
- Privacy. Check what the app stores and whether chats are used to train models. Don't share real personal details in character.
- Content settings. Each app has its own content policy. Pick one that matches what you're comfortable with.
- Wellbeing. AI characters can feel personal. Take breaks, and remember you're talking to a model, not a person.
Where Be My Story fits
Be My Story is story-first, not character-first: you choose one of ten romance and drama story experiences, write your character's dialogue or actions, and read AI-generated scene replies. With an account you can save separate stories. If character chat feels too open-ended and you want a plot, it's built for that. Looking at other options? See our Character.AI alternatives guide.
Frequently asked questions
How does AI character chat work?
A chatbot is given a personality through a description, a greeting and example dialogue. A large language model then writes each reply, guided by that description and the conversation so far.
Is AI character chat the same as an AI story app?
Not quite. Character chat starts from a personality and is an open-ended conversation. Story apps start from a scenario with a setting and situation, and the scene moves toward events. Our AI roleplay guide compares the formats.
Can teenagers use Character.AI?
Character.AI announced in October 2025 that from November 25, 2025, users under 18 could no longer chat with characters. Rules differ by app and change over time; see our guide to whether Character.AI is safe.
How do I get better AI character conversations?
Give the character something specific to react to, stay in the fiction, put the two of you in a situation instead of an interview, and write fuller turns; the model mirrors you.
